FSPS Students Help Construct Beds for Local Children
Fort Smith Public Schools (FSPS), the Rotary Club of Fort Smith, the Community Rescue Mission, and the Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) organization joined forces on a handcrafted, bed construction project. According to SHP, 3% of children nationwide, between the ages of 3 and 17 years of age, do not have a bed in which to sleep.
The Fort Smith Chapter of SHP is only the second in Arkansas and in the short year since the chapter started, they have built and delivered 59 beds to families in the community. Northside students were able to help them build 30 more beds on Friday while putting the knowledge and skills they had learned in their construction class to use.
Fort Smith Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Morawski said, “This project gives our students a chance to serve their community while enhancing their skill set."
Fort Smith Rotary Club volunteer member Ken Colley said “No kid should sleep on the floor in our town. Studies have shown that if a child has a good night’s sleep, they will be much more apt to stay alert in the classroom and be able to focus and remember what they learn. Our organization is very excited to have the opportunity to help and provide the necessary support to these children in need.”
