MIDDLE SCHOOL MONDAY: A Closer Look at the Learning Wheel
Entering 6th grade middle school students will be participating in a new concept called ‘The Learning Wheel’, which includes required exploratory classes that will allow students to discover new career paths and experiences throughout the school year.
6th grade students will have four different exploratory classes, one every 9 weeks. Every 6th grade student will take the Career Connections and STEM exploratory classes. The other two classes will be assigned to the student based on the two year-long electives selected by the student.
Watch this video as Dr. Amy Manley shares a closer look at the Learning Wheel and how it will work.
MIDDLE SCHOOL MONDAY: Logistics of Lunch: Where Do I Go Now
Lunchtime at middle school for 6th and 7th grade students may look a little different at each middle school campus. We encourage all of our entering 6th and 7th graders to attend Transition to Success Meetings at the middle schools on July 28 for 6th grade and July 29 for 7th grade. During these meetings, students will have the opportunity to experience exactly what lunchtime will look like! Students will also be able to learn the lunchtime procedures at their school during the first week of school, and staff members will be available to help students with any questions. Watch this video by Dr. Amy Manley as she shares more about the logistics of lunch.
Look for more information to be shared this month about the Transition to Success Meetings at your middle school!
MIDDLE SCHOOL MONDAY: Building on Student Success: Cornerstone Classes are Key
Next school year, middle school students will be introduced to new and innovative Cornerstone Classes. These 25-minute daily classes are intentionally designed to help every student be successful as they learn and grow throughout the school year. Dr. Kreimer-Hall, Darby principal, shares what each day will look like in the Cornerstone Classes and why these classes are key for student success in middle school.
Cornerstone Classes at a Glance

- Includes goal setting and team building in small groups
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - Response to Intervention

MIDDLE SCHOOL MONDAY: CHOICES - Athletics in 6th grade
In middle school, 6th grade students will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of a variety of athletic activities over the course of a school year through nine-week rotations. These nine-week rotations are specifically designed for students to learn the basics of football, volleyball, basketball, track and soccer, in a fun environment with their peers.
With access to learn more about these sports, students may wish to further develop their skills as they move through middle school and on to high school. Watch this video from FSPS Athletic Director Michael Beaumont as he shares his excitement for 6th grade students to explore athletic opportunities next school year.
Middle school monday: Choices - Selecting the Best for You
You may hear teachers and school administrators talking about a “middle school mindset.” What they mean is that often junior high schools (because they serve older students) can be focused on helping students accumulate credits important for graduation. Middle schools are geared toward mastering the content of a class while they also teach and build capacity for success through the choices students learn to make in middle school.
In addition to their core classes, English, Math, Social Studies and Science, FSPS middle schoolers have the opportunity to choose two elective classes. One might be a specific music class that allows a student to develop fundamental playing skills that will be critical for continuing that elective. In addition, the same students will have the chance to explore other disciplines in nine-week rotations.
Watch these videos about all middle schools featuring Darby Middle School principal Dr. Katie Kreimer-Hall. She explains more about the choices 6th graders will have when they get to middle school.
FSPS Middle Schools: A Little More of Everything in 2021-2022
FSPS sixth graders moving into middle school at Chaffin, Darby, Kimmons or Ramsey this coming school year can look forward to more art, more music, more PE, more STEM, more Computer applications and added career connections programming.
Sixth graders attending an elementary school were limited to one art, music or physical education class each week. In middle school, these students will have expanded opportunities to learn more about these disciplines as an elective or in nine-week exploratory classes. A new career connections class rounds out the four quarters of the school year. This means that former weekly classes become daily chances to dig a little deeper into subjects that could be of interest to a student in the future.
Career Connection classes help to focus a student’s attention on career possibilities and the skills necessary to be successful in higher education and the workforce.
