Highlights and Headlines: September 23, 2024 Board Meeting Recap

At the September 23, 2024, board meeting, Dr. Tiffany Bone, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, presented findings from a recent analysis of student work. This analysis was spurred by an audit conducted by Curriculum Management Solutions (CMSi) in April 2022. Examples of student work were collected from across the district during the first three weeks of school and were evaluated based on three key standards: content, context, and depth of knowledge.

The results showed that some assignments were below grade level, likely due to the typical review activities at the start of the school year. Most of the work resembled traditional classroom assignments, lacking variety, and much of it only required basic understanding. Dr. Bone stated that while equal distribution of assignment types is not expected, there should be greater diversity in the types of work assigned. She reiterated that the work likely required low-level understanding because teachers were reviewing prior material. The ultimate goal is to provide students with more rigorous, higher-level assignments. To work toward continuous improvement, the district plans to increase collaboration among teachers so they can share example lessons and strategies.
