Purple Up for Military Kids!
April is recognized nationwide as Month of the Military Child, as established by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1986, to recognize and thank children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle. Many military children experience multiple relocations and/or long-term separations from parents/guardians who are called to active duty or deployed overseas. “Purple UP” is the campaign that acknowledges and supports military-connected kids in our schools and communities.
On Friday, April 16, we’re asking YOU to “Purple Up for Military Kids” by wearing purple, taking a selfie, and posting your picture to social media using the hashtag #purpleup4militarykids to support military-connected students within our community and classrooms. Tag Fort Smith Public Schools when you share to be featured on FSPS social media!
Did you know? More than 14,000 Arkansans serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. Many serve on active duty while others serve in the reserve forces and in the National Guard. More than 5,200 military children are enrolled in Arkansas public schools.
Please join us in showing appreciation for the sacrifices these students make while supporting their military parents or guardians.
Month of the Military Child is sponsored by the Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy and supported by many other organizations, including the ADE Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission.
