Tier 1- Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Supports

  • Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL concepts provide an extra dimension to education, focusing on improving cooperation, communication, and decision-making. SEL gives students a framework for developing these skills in a world community where emotional intelligence is critical for lifelong happiness, successful careers, and healthier relationships.


    Social emotional learning addresses five core competencies and can be taught in many ways across many settings and platforms in the same way math or reading is taught. Students also learn social-emotional skills in various ways, including the behavior they see modeled by the adults in their lives. Lessons taught are intended to equip students with the mindsets, knowledge, and skills to handle strong emotions, make and follow through on good decisions, and create strong friendships while avoiding or de-escalating peer conflicts.

  • Social and Emotional Learning Chart Self-awareness

    The ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and value and how they influence behavior.

    Self-management 

    The ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations — effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating oneself.

    Social Awareness

    The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

    Relationship Skills

    The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

    Responsible Decision-Making

    The ability to make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety concerns, and social norms.
