WHAT IS A FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM?
A unique and research-based parent engagement program for family members that have children from Pre-K to 6th grade to come and learn English, receive day care for small children, and spend time learning how to support their children at home.
IS THERE A DAY CARE PROGRAM?
Parents who have children aged 0-4.5 can bring them to our on-site childcare classroom.
HOW DOES THIS PROGRAM WORK?
Parents will spend part of the time in their child’s classroom, part of the time in the Adult ESL classroom.
In the Adult Education/ESL classroom, parents will learn to speak, read and write in English to help their child's learning at home and how to communicate with the school. Other topics include health literacy, financial literacy, US Citizenship, community resources and others.
Parent and Child Together (P.A.C.T.) Time will involve the parent sitting beside their child in class, connecting them directly to their child's classroom and teacher, where they will see teachers modeling learning strategies that will give them the tools that will help to support learning at home.
Parents will do the same work as the children in the class. Parents are there to be students, not observers.
WHERE DO THE CLASSES MEET?
Currently, we have a Family Literacy program at Howard Elementary in order to serve the parents and students of Howard Elementary. Our goal is to expand this program to other elementary schools in the future. We also have a program at St. Boniface Church. Call 479-785-1232 for details.
