• CONCURRENT

    Concurrent college courses are one-semester college courses taken while in high school.  There are two options to be concurrently enrolled at Southside High School:

    • SmartStart Classes - general education college courses.  These classes are taught at Southside. 
      • Students are eligible for admission to the program with a 2.5+ high school GPA and 19+ sub scores on the ACT (or equivalent)
      • Students may also receive placement for the program through the ACCUPLACER exam (offered on the UAFS campus & at Southside)
    • WATC/PEAK Classes - career training that may result in industry certifications.  WATC classes are taught on the UAFS campus or on the PEAK campus. 
      • Available to students in grades 11-12. (10th grade with permission, with associate degree pathway
      • Students are eligible for admission to most of the WATC/PEAK classes with a 2.0+ GPA and test scores on file from ACT Aspire, ACT, or ACCUPLACER. Students in the LPN program must have 19+ subscores in English, Reading, and Math on the ACT.

    The Peak Innovation Center is a place where career and college-bound students develop real-world skills and earn industry-specific certifications to create a future workforce that will drive success across the industry and beyond. Beyond high school students, the center is utilized to meet the retraining needs of incumbent workers through our partnerships with Fort Smith Adult Education, the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, and the Regional Workforce Development Group. 

    High school classes offered at PEAK  may be

    • college & high school WATC programs or
    • high school credit training programs.

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT

    Advanced Placement (AP) classes are a full-year and may result in college credit depending upon the AP score and the receiving college.
